Disposable, cartridge or pod — pick the hardware first

The single most useful thing to settle before you shop is which type of device you want, because it determines what you can buy next time.

Disposables are self-contained. Battery, oil and mouthpiece in one sealed unit, used until empty and then recycled. 510 cartridges screw onto a standard threaded battery — the 510 thread is an industry convention, so a cartridge from one brand fits a battery from another. Pods are proprietary. A pod fits one brand’s device and nothing else, so you are choosing a small ecosystem rather than just a flavour. Several brands run pod systems and the devices are generally well made, but check which system a pod belongs to before you order.

If you already own a 510 battery, start with cartridges. If you own nothing, a disposable is the simplest way in.

What is actually inside

Beyond the hardware, vapes differ by the kind of extract they hold, and this is where flavour differences come from.

Distillate is the most common and the most neutral. Flavour usually comes from added terpenes.

Live resin is made from flash-frozen fresh plant material, which preserves more of the original aromatic compounds.

Live rosin is solventless, pressed with heat and pressure rather than extracted chemically. It is the premium end of the category, and the one people most often describe as tasting like the plant it came from.

Liquid diamonds and similar blends combine a crystalline concentrate with a terpene-rich liquid.

Unit sizes run from half-gram through one gram up to larger two-gram devices.
